Direct Probing of Lattice‐Strain‐Induced Oxygen Release in LiCoO<sub>2</sub> and Li<sub>2</sub>MnO<sub>3</sub> without Electrochemical Cycling (Adv. Mater. 29/2023)

Li-Ion Battery Cathodes In article 2212098, Jaekwang Lee, Sung-Yoon Chung, and co-workers demonstrate that a significant amount of oxygen loss can be induced exclusively by lattice strain even in pristine layered oxides, LiCoO2 Li2MnO3, without any electrochemical Li extraction. Calculations based on density functional theory also clarify shear strain, among many different modes mechanical provide major contribution to the energetically favorable formation vacancies, critically supporting experimental observations.
